Actress – Maze (Long Version)
March 25, 2010
Whew, what a tune this is:
Actress made one of my favourite tunes of last year – Freak For You – under his Thriller moniker. Maze is a taster of his new album and it is just gorgeous. More please. Buy at Boomkat or emusic.
Rewind: Special Request
October 29, 2009
Stop whatever you are doing and listen to this record. It may be from 2003, it may be really badly recorded, and it may be deeply offensive but it is still amazing.
Special Request is a paen to some of Britain’s favourite serial killers and a rock solid old school dancehall track to boot. When it came out there were rumours that this was a Chris Morris side project. There was also a story that Carlton Killawatt Valley was an unemployed plumber from Wolverhampton (or something like that). Either way they’re on to a winner.
Have a listen here if you dare.
Killawatt Valley is also to be found on MySpace and some of his more recent tracks are available from the excellent Rubadub records.
NB: I think it’s fair to say that this track is, in internet parlance, NSFW. Use your headphones.
Brassica – my tune of the year so far
June 19, 2009

Been meaning to upload this for a while now. A couple of minutes of scratchy violins and white noise before it kicks in but be patient: it’s worth it. At nearly 9 minutes, it’s not quite long enough. And I’m more of a 3 minute man myself…. Seriously, this tune is amazing folks.
Brassica is London-based experimental producer Michael Anthony Wright. I don’t know much about him and there’s not much on the web but this is by far his most commercial sounding release. The Centre is a kind of mutant disco number, released a few months ago on the hugely exciting new London label Dissident. The sound is complex. It almost feels like some lost masterpiece from way back, yet it’s unmistakably now, fusing Italo, Detroit techno, and a melancholia that reminds me of Slint or God Speed You Black Emperor more than anything electronic. I bet it sounds incredible on the right dancefloor.
Well that’s enough waxing lyrical. Have a listen, comment, spread the love.

Bit of UK Funky
June 16, 2009
UK Funky genre summary:
- Sound of the summer, obviously.
- High shit to awesome ratio, but the awesome stuff really is awesome.
- Takes interesting bits of the past (UKG, house) and the present (dubstep) and refits them for 2009 dancefloor action.
- Liked by old dudes and new producers.
- Mp3s pretty hard to get hold of except as low quality radio rips.
- Girls can dance to it.
Check out this MJ Cole track, it’s really excellent: Gotta Have It (MJ’s Funky Dubb).
Joker
June 2, 2009
Joker is on fire at the moment. He started 2009 with the brilliant Digidesign on Hyperdub and has somehow got better since.
Do It is one of the best tracks of the year. Menacing synth funk, distorted but still tuneful vocals and a West Coast/Country swing. Too good. Mp3.
Snake Eater is from last year and sounds a bit like Milanese’s Caramel Cognac in that it takes a female vocal sample and ties it up with some bass and synth madness. Maybe this is the elusive dinner party dubstep – although the catering would be by Heston Blumenthal. Mp3.
His new collaborative 12” with Ginz is stunning. I thought Purple City was good but ReUp is amazing. Both streaming on his myspace.
Jimi Polo – better days (pianos!)
May 11, 2009

Played this last night at the Redchurch and it got a bit of a cheer so thought I’d share it. Classic piano house from 1989.

Those of you in London can catch Librarianstep at Sundazed & Confused – every Sunday at the Redchurch (Redchurch Street, off Brick Lane). 8pm-1am(ish -later on bank holidays). Free entry.
Gui Boratto being euphoric
April 21, 2009

Maybe it’s because the sun has come out but I just can’t get enough optimistic housey goodness at the moment. Gui Boratto can be quite moody but this is as euphoric as it gets.
Floating Points – Love Me Like This
April 18, 2009
This 12” from Floating Points is a bit of a stunner if you like rolling, sumptuous house. It’s super deep but the tune twists and turns enough to keep it interesting as well as hypnotic. Sounds a bit Theo Parrish, a bit Thriller/Unknown and possibly a bit Isolee as well. Cracking.
Mp3 here, buy it at Boomkat.
Buraka Som Sistema remix
April 16, 2009
Lykke Li – Dance Dance Dance (Buraka Som Sistema remix)
I really like Lykke Li but there have been some pretty dodgy remixes flying around. This one however, posted over at Mad Decent, is great. We’ve posted about Buraka Som Sistema before – would love to see a live show sometime. Really exciting sound. Is 2009 going to be the year that Pop got its Bass? Or maybe Bass got its Pop.
Great pop song
April 9, 2009
I’ve been vaguely aware of Chromeo for a while but always found them a bit cheesey. But I had my ipod on shuffle this morning and this came on and it totally grabbed me. So far i’ve listened to it 4 times today. I suppose you’d call it electro funk but as far as I’m concerned it’s timeless pop. This is the Playgroup mix
